Embedded World: Infineon TC4x MCUs cleared for AI safety

Infineon has had its forthcoming TC4x automotive microcontrollers cleared for safe AI processing by the Fraunhofer Institute for Cognitive Systems (IKS).

“Embedded AI is becoming increasingly important for safety-critical real-time applications,” said Infineon. “However, this also creates new requirements and standards that must be considered during the complete product lifecycle.”

The TC4x family includes ‘PPU’ (parallel processing unit), an AI-accelerator intended to be ASIL-D compliant and aimed at motor control, battery management, vehicle motion control and siren detection.

Fraunhofer IKS has proposed a set of AI-specific safety requirements, called Safe AI and based on ISO PAS 8800, which assesses the trustworthiness of AI in terms of robustness, data utility, ODD (operational design domain) and environmental conditions.

And it is to Safe AI that Fraunhofer IKS has assessed TC4x.

“We are very proud that our microcontroller has passed the Safe AI assessment by the Fraunhofer Institute for Cognitive Intelligence,” said Infineon v-p of microcontrolles Thomas Boehm.  “Integration of safe and reliable AI functionality into automotive microcontroller families is essential to further improve vehicle performance, safety, and comfort.”
