TDK extends smart motor driver family for vehicles

TDK has announced automotive smart motor drivers that can handle 4 x 1A peak current and include an Arm Cortex-M3 processor core.

HVC 5222D with 32kbyte of flash and HVC 5422D with 64kbyte can drive brushless dc, brushed dc (2A) and stepper motors.

They also have 4kbyte ram, 2kbyte of emulated eeprom and 1kbyte of non-volatile registers, and are “SEooC ASIL B ready according to ISO 26262 to support functional safety applications”, said the company.


Motor-specific functions include current programming for micro-stepping and integrated phase voltage comparators, a virtual star-point and current sense amplification for sensor-based and sensor-less motor control.


AEC-Q100 certification is to temperature Grade 1.

Very little additional information is yet available: total path resistance somewhere under 3.2Ω, current measurement can be internal or external, and the package is a 5x5mm 24pad PQFN, with exposed heat pad.

Among the HVC family’s nine members, which all have a Cortex-M3 CPU, peripherals include 12bit 1µs ADC, LIN transceivers and UARTs. PWM control via the LIN pin is also supported.

Samples are now available, and production is planned for the first quarter of 2025.
