Brexit: Will industry vote for stability?

Always wanting to be even-handed, we have been searching the electronics industry for someone who has presented an argument for Brexit.

Last week, we published the pro-EU arguments from the president of the IET, but I have yet to find someone within the industry presenting the case for a vote for Brexit in June.

Surely, there are good arguments both for and against Brexit.

The pro-EU arguments point to the importance of industrial partnerships with firms in the EU, research funding, skills migration and the whole open market question.

But if you are an advocate of Brexit you will argue that UK firms have partnerships with US and Asian firms which can be developed outside of the EU.

Why should the UK be dependent on France and Germany for its tech skills? We have some of the best universities in the world.

Research funding is certainly an issue. But any shortfall in EU-funded projects could and should be supported by increased UK government spending.

Brexit supporters argue for greater independence and this will bring responsibilities.

As regards the market question. Suppliers from the US, Japan, Korean and China seem to have no difficulty in winning market share in the EU electronics market.
So UK exporters will not be excluded from EU markets should the country vote for Brexit next month.

Those are the pros and cons, and yet I only see statements from the sector in support of EU membership.

Maybe business leaders in the sector are weary of any change in the status quo.
It is likely that Brexit would create business uncertainty in the short term before the equilibrium is restored.

It seems to be a case of better the devil you know.

  1. The next time I read a blog, I hope that it doesnt disappoint me
as much as this one. I mean, I understand it was my choice to read, but I really thought youd
have something fascinating to say. All I hear is a group of whining about something which you could fix if you werent overly busy looking for focus.
