Gadget Book: Applied Embedded Electronics

This one is aimed at professionals – I’m stretching the ‘Gadget Book’ definition – and covers the design of embedded system electronics: Applied Embedded Electronics: Design Essentials for Robust Systems.

Gadget Book: Applied Embedded Electronics

The elevator pitch is that it’s “a comprehensive design reference, from initial concept to final PCB, for all embedded system electronics”.

The publishers write:

“This book guides you through all of the techniques listed, which are required for a reliable integrated system. Through extensive illustrations and minimal equations, anyone with an interest in electronics will quickly grasp the ideas discussed.”

The book differentiates itself from others in the embedded system area because the emphasis is on the circuits and systems needed, and it deals with all the “gotcha” issues beyond the digital design functionality.

Subjects covered include:

  • Ideal versus actual connections, components, digital, signals
  • Architecting an embedded system
  • Digital interface selection by application, speed, distance
  • Multivoltage power supplies
  • High frequency power integrity
  • Battery and charging systems
  • EMI reduction and ESD protection
  • Driving and sensing peripherals
  • Digital feedback control
  • Optimization of power consumption and cost
  • Specialty systems: medical, industrial, aerospace
  • PCB design including manufacturability, yield, and low noise

You can find a chapter-by-chapter breakdown here, and the book is on Amazon here.

Author

The author is the vastly experienced San Diego-based Jerry Twomey. As well as designing ICs, PCBs and systems, he chairs IEEE SD Microwave Theory and Techniques, and is a reviewer for the IEEE Journal of Solid State Circuits, and the IEEE Journal of Microwave Theory and Techniques, and he has written for magazines.

He has also lectured UCSD ECE Graduate Studies and taught seminars in embedded systems, IC design, EMC, and medical technology.

“Jerry Twomey has designed many consumer, medical, aerospace, and commercial products. This includes: high-speed data communication, satellite chipsets, medical instrumentation, cell phones, RF devices, and others. His focus is nondigital electronics, namely those areas where the biggest challenges are.”

Outside electronics, I read, he enjoys racing sailboats, restoring classic cars, skiing, hiking and camping, yoga and music. A busy man.

  1. It must be decades since I bought an O’Reilly book.

They used to be stocked in bookshops but that was then.

Can’t even donate them to charity shops these days since they’re so out of date.

    • Technical details do age rather quickly, don’t they, zeitghost? Unfortunately. Though they do last longer than fruit or veg, let alone a Liz Truss premiership…

      • Yup there used to be shelves of books by O’Reilly etc in PC World when that was a thing, and the local Waterstones had a reasonable stock, which turned out to be unfortunately located when the roof leaked.
