Accurate LCR meter has extremely wide ranges

Sciospec LCR-1 is a PC-based single-channel LCR meter that offers 2-, 3- and 4-port measurements across 100mHz to 500kHz, with 1mΩ – 1TΩ, 10fF – 1kF and 1nH – 1TH capability.

Options include upper frequency expansion to 1 or 10MHz, and it comes with PC-based software for automated measurements and analysis, which displays up to four parameters at the same time.

“Results are evaluated in terms of equivalent circuit models,” according to parts distributor Saelig Company. “Real life components include parasitic components, both capacitance and inductance [and] LCR-1 can determine the values of inductance, capacitance and resistance, or combinations thereof.”


The instrument works by applying ac voltage or current to the component-under-test, then analysing phase shift and amplitude of the voltage and current waveforms.

Base accuracy is 0.01% over much of the central ranges, decreasing eventually to 10% at extremes of component value and high frequency (see graph).

Ranging is automatic ranging, with a manual triggering mode, and four presets are available for storing measurement parameters. Other settings include: port configuration, integration time, averaging and compensation.

It measures ~110 x 220 x 60mm and weighs 1kg.

There is a matching range of test adapters, including fixtures for: wired components, SMD components, dielectrics and liquids, and one with Kelvin clips.

Saelig sees it being used in material testing, especially testing materials used in sensors and actuators, for example in the automotive industry. “In educational settings and research laboratories the LCR-1 can be a helpful tool for teaching and conducting experiments related to electrical circuits and components”, it added.
