Black package boosts photodiode SNR

Vishay has introduced a pair of surface-mount PIN photodiodes in black packages whose opaque side walls eliminate unwanted illumination to increase their signal to noise ratio.

AEC-Q101 qualified for automotive use, VEMD4010X01 and VEMD4110X01 come in a 0805 case size with an 0.7mm profile – 0.15mm lower than previous-generation devices. Sensitive area is 0.42mm².

VEMD4010X01 is sensitive across 550nm to 1,040nm
VEMD4110X01 is sensitive across 740nm to 1,040nm, with a daylight blocking filter, and is matched with 830nm to 950nm infra-red emitters

Peak sensitivity is at 910nm, and angle half sensitivity is ±55°.

They have a reverse light current of 2.4µA and typically 1nA dark current. Operation is over -40°C to +110°C.

Parts are RoHS-compliant, halogen-free and Vishay Green. Moisture sensitivity is level 3 in accordance with J-STD-020 for a floor life of 168h.

Applications are foreseen in automotive rain, light, and tunnel sensors as well as solar load sensors and light barriers, then as reflective sensors in consumer touch-less taps, toilets and rubbish bins.
