Toshiba 2.5A smart photocouplerToshiba has released a ±2.5A output IGBT gate driving photo-coupler with and isolated fault feedback, that can also drive mosfet gates.

Called TLP5212, it “features a new totem pole output with two n-channel mosfets,” according to the company. “In addition, the photocoupler incorporates de-saturation detection, active Miller clamp, under-voltage lock-out, soft gate turn-off and a fault output.”

Maximum propagation delay is 250ns, with ±150ns propagation delay skew.

The internal input circuit is a Toshiba-made infra-red LED expected to be run at 7.5 – 12mA (800mV max bias for ‘off’), and the output circuit needs total of 15 to 30V, including a negative bias of 0 to -15V. The isolated fault feedback circuit needs 2.7 to 5.5V.

A signal on the input side is required to to resume operation after a fault. In development is the TLP5222 which will resume automatically after a specified time. Update: the TLP5222 can be found here

Packaging is 10.3 x 10 x 2.3mm SO16L with 8mm minimum creepage and up to 5,000Vrms isolation between input and output. Operation is over -40 to +110°C.

Applications are foreseen in inverters, AC servo drives, photovoltaic inverters and uninterruptible power supplies .

The TLP5212 product page can be found here. The data sheet is not exactly dripping with application information, but there are two levels of application note to support it: introductory and the splendidly detailed advanced edition – and several more applicable application notes are linked from the bottom of the product page.
