The University of Southampton is storing data onto glass at a density that would squeeze 500Tbyte onto a substrate the size of a CD. Data is written as miniature shapes through the bulk of silica glass using the three spatial dimensions. The shapes have two separate optical characteristics – adding two more dimensions – making this so-called five-dimensional (‘5d’) data storage. ...

Electronics patent of the month: Secure storage on memory sticks
It's hard to hear the phrases, "Your mission, should you decide to accept it" or "this tape will self-destruct in five seconds" without bringing to mind Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt (or for the older readers, Dan Briggs or Jim Phelps) of the Mission: Impossible series. Since the dawn of time, man has developed ingenious ways of sending secret messages around the globe and cryptography has come along way since the Atbash and Julius Caesar's cipher.
Toshiba, SanDisk sampling 19nm NAND
Toshiba and SanDisk will sample 19nm NAND flash as from the end of this month and plan to mass produce it in Q3.
Numonyx Increases 128Mbit Phase Change Cycles To 1m
Numonyx, now owned by Micron Technology, says it has increased the read/write cycles on its 128Mbit phase change memory from 100,000 to 1m. The 128Mbit...
New memory technology to replace NAND
According to the Wall Street Journal, a new memory technology, to be commercialised within two years, will take over from NAND flash which is seen to have scaling difficulties after the 32nm generation.
Judge raps Rambus for destroying lawsuit documents
Rambus has been rapped by a US judge for destroying documents related to its lawsuit against Micron. The judge has rules that, as a result of its misconduct,...
Fe-NAND To boost performance and scaling of NAND
NAND flash memory could be about to get a make-over. Fe-NAND, the invention of two Japanese academics, will provide huge performance benefits to NAND, and permit the scaling of NAND to well below its currently expected limits.
Spansion positions EcoRAM Mirrorbit NOR flash memory for servers
Spansion, the NOR flash manufacturer, has come up with a Mirrorbit NOR flash memory for servers which, it claims, can substantially cut the amount of energy used in Internet data centres.
Military moves to solid state memory
Flash drives have advanced rapidly to meet these challenges, opening up new applications, like mission recording, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and countermeasures
Hynix licenses technology for higher density DRAM
Innovative Silicon, a developer of DRAM technology based on a single transistor cell and licensed its technology to manufacturer Hynix Semiconductor
