“The target is to get the tests into a form which can be used for certifying mobiles by the end of the year,” said Dan Fox, mobile business unit manager, Anritsu, “and it looks like this target is just about achievable.”
A survey by ARC Group this month found over half of industry professionals believed 3G would have little influence this year, but Fox believed this is missing the point.
“Anritsu invested in 3G with a long term aim, we’re in it for the long haul. We’re betting in the long term 3G will become the predominant standard,” said Fox. “A more important survey would be one saying consumers don’t ever want 3G services. That would be more alarming.”
Fox said there is a lot of interest in much higher data rates. “People are anticipating that once 3G services are deployed it will open up a Pandora’s Box of other things you can do.”
Anritsu is already looking at 3.5G and 4G technologies which includes HSDPA with a theoretical downlink data rate of 14.2Mbit/s. “It’s all about more bandwidth and faster data rates,” said Fox.
