Elektra Awards 2021 – Test Product of the Year

Winner
Rohde & Schwarz – RTS: Accelerating the development of automotive radar for autonomous driving
The RTS radar test system for automotive radar sensors electronically simulates even laterally moving objects for testing radar-based advanced driver assistance systems and radar sensors in autonomously driving cars over the air.

The RTS radar test system consists of the new R&S AREG800A automotive radar echo generator (as a back end) and the R&S QAT100 antenna array (front end). Laterally moving objects are currently simulated by mechanically moving antennas, but the RTS replaces the mechanical movement by electronically switching individual antennas in the front end on and off.

It helps meet the challenges presented by the need to emulate extremely complex real-world moving object environments in the laboratory for the development of next-generation radar. One judge remarked on the “highly innovative automotive radar test instrument to accelerate product development”. Using innovative techniques, the RTS enables faster, more in-depth and safer development of advanced radar-based features from basic assistance to full autonomous driving. For one judge, the RTS radar test system “finds that perfect balance between full road testing and conventional laboratory testing – an achievement to be proud of”.
