DTI strategy team asks companies for answers

The Government has started a fact-finding exercise as it prepares a long-term strategy document for the electronics industry which will address the decline in manufacturing.

Working through its Electronics Innovation and Growth Team (EIGT), the DTI is seeking advice on the industry supply chain, the importance of small and medium-sized firms (SMEs) and skills issues.

“We are particularly interested in what can be done to help SMEs compete in a business environment that is strongly influenced by supply chains extended by offshore outsourcing,” said Silu Ali, EIGT programme manager.

The EIGT was set up by the Government a year ago to address the long-term development of the UK electronics industry. It is expected to present its recommendations to the Government in June.

Over the next two months the team will be approaching representatives from industry, trade bodies and those involved in training and education. The team has drawn up a list of key organisations it wants to speak to.

“We will look at innovation, trying to understand why the UK has a poor record for commercialising new ideas,” said Ali, speaking to representatives of the industry at an event organised by distribution association Afdec.

“Although we will be inviting specific organisations to take part, we are interested to hear from anybody who has specific views they want to communicate to us,” said Ali.
