Frustration at lack of Pb-free details

Many component suppliers are still confusing and frustrating customers with a lack of information on the availability and use of lead-free alternative products.

According to Gary Nevison, Premier Farnell’s head of product market strategy, the flow of product information from some suppliers is still fairly slow.

“This is causing considerable customer frustration as they seek to understand which of the products they purchase are already compliant or not and, if not, when they will be,” Nevison, who is also chairman of the RoHS committee within industry association Afdec, told Electronics Weekly.

Manufacturers’ practice of using their websites to provide customers with information on lead-free products shows mixed results.

The view is that a majority of component suppliers now claim to offer lead-free options for some of their product lines. “The vast majority are offering RoHS compliant parts. Most will be ready ahead of July 2006, but it could be tight for some,” said Nevison.
