Electronica: OKdo stocks first 8 core Rock 5B single-board computers

After revealing it would make and stock Rock single-board computers earlier this year, component distributor OKdo announced availability of the Rock 5B today at Electronica.

This is an octo-core computer that delivers “the kind of desktop PC level performance required for compute intense activities such as AI or gaming, as well as object recognition, predictive maintenance or motion detection and analysis”, claimed OKdo, which has a deal with Radxa to manufacture and distribute both Rock SBCs and system-on-modules.

On the board are quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 and a quad-core ‘DynamIQ’ Cortex-A55 processors within a Rockchip RK3588 which also has an Arm Mali-G610 GPU and NPU (neural processing unit), plus video encode and video decode.

The GPU supports Open GL ES3.2 and Vulkan 1.2, as well Open CL 2.2 to allow the CPUs to off-load intensive number-crunching. For AI, the NPU is rated at 6Tops.

For video capture there is an 4Kp60 HDMI input, and there are dual HDMI video outputs, plus one USB-C and one MIPI DSI for a total of four displays.

Ethernet is present at 2.5Gbit/s, “ideal for dealing with intensive data transfers on the network, such as NAS applications or as part of a compute cluster”, said OKdo. For audio, there is a four-ring jack and support for stereo-out and microphone-in “making it suitable as a desktop PC replacement for video calls, or if coupled to the NPU, providing the capability to build a voice assistant application”.

A standard micro-SD card can be accommodated, and there is provision for eMMC modules.

The battery-backed real-time clock on-board maintains time between power-downs, and can be used for automated sleep-wake activity.

Physical IO includes a push button for power-up and power-down without storage corruption, and a 40pin header is backs by a 12bit 1Msample/s successive-approximation ADC “which is ideal for fast and precision sensor measurements”, said the distributor.

For cooling, there are holes to mount a heatsink and a fan connector.
