China consortium formed to push solid state EV battery development

China has formed a consortium of solid state battery developers to push the technology fearing that its EV industry could become uncompetitive if other countries bring out EVs with solid state batteries before China does.

Called the China All-Solid-State Battery Collaborative Innovation Platform (CASIP) it includes: CATL, FinDreams Battery (a BYD subsidiary) , CALB, EVE Energy and Gotion High-tech.

CASIP includes academia with universities and research institutes including  the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and government-backed investment funds.

CASIP intends to have a supply chain for solid state batteries up and running by 2030. Toyota plans to sell EVs with solid-state batteries in 2027-2028, and Nissan in 2028-29.

Solid state batteries are expected to revolutionise the EV market by delivering 1000 mile range with ten minute charging time.
