The IoT deployment will use Evrythng’s Janela platform to provide digital identity and data management capabilities to consumer products at the point of manufacturing.
The digital identity will also be used to provide smartphone applications and services to the consumer. For example, consumers will be able to unlock personalised digital content, services, offers and extras, or link to third-party apps for other rewards and benefits.
It will also produce real-time data analytics to tackle problems like product authentication for brand protection and increased efficiency in supply chains.
Niall Murphy, CEO and co-founder at Evrythng, said:
“The fact that at least 10 billion Avery Dennison RBIS products will be digitised at the point of manufacture is both a milestone in making the internet of things mainstream and a huge enabler for the apparel and footwear industry in particular.”
“We are enabling products for these brands to be ‘born digital’ and create new value with IoT applications, which is a huge opportunity for the industry as a whole.”
Mitch Butier, Avery Dennison’s recently appointed president and chief executive officer (pictured), said:
“We can make apparel and footwear products smarter and enable them to participate in digital applications and services, helping to drive new consumer experiences, protect brands’ value, and provide supply chains with real-time analytics.”

Nightmare!…..that’s up to 10Bn Kids, Teenagers, Fashionista Adults and Active Elderly being tracked and monitored….beaconing their presence/where(ware!)abouts, and likely with no opt out or opportunity to turn beaconing/tracking off. Tie purchase to item as POS and tag credit card/debit card/bank account(cheque?) and that gives personal details – even if bought as a present. Sensors in shops, warehouses, transport hubs, public spaces, government buildings etc. then provide a time stamped trail of bread-crumbs of where you have been and when, possibly by correlating repeat adjacent datasets data mining will show that plus who you were with. The prospects for abuse (and supeaona?) are immense. Worse still ‘sheep’ who are unaware of the risks will voluntarily upload info for the ‘convenience’ of apps and ‘offers’, not realising risks or fact they have now become the ‘product’! Dumb!
