They are:

  • D35/833333 high-power circulator (pictured)
  • C83327 high-power termination
  • D35/83393 high-power termination
  • C35/83387 medium-power termination
  • D83359 2×2 hybrid coupler
  • D83328 SMA test coupler
  • C35/82970 high-power isolator
  • C35/83394 high-power isolator
  • D35/83391 CW high-power isolator
  • D35/83391 CCW high-power isolator
  • C35/83380 low-power isolator
  • C35/83394 high-power TNC transition
  • C108269 high-power TNC transition (right angles)
  • C108511 medium-power SMA transition
  • C182900 low-power SMA transition

Picking one as an example (pictured), the high power circulator works across 7 – 9GHz and offers an insertion loss of 0.15dBmax and a return loss of 20dBmin. Power handling is 340W CW PFM or 215W CW FM. Multipaction is 340Wpeak by test and 677Wpeak by analysis. Nominal mass is 224g, and it is aimed at LEO and GEO satellite application.

All the devices have aluminium housings with clear passivation and low emissivity paint (precious metal plating on request). Mechanical modifications can be made: circulation or flanges, for example .

The designs have been tested and space qualified in the company’s laboratory in Dundee, Scotland – qualification includes thermal shock and cycling, sine/random vibration, mechanical shock and, where appropriate, continuous waveform and peak power under TVAC, critical power and seeded multipaction.

“All our waveguides have been used in one deep space mission and some in several,” said Smiths general manager Tullio Panarello.

As well as space, some of the parts are used in terrestrial defence applications, according to Smiths.
